Isla & Ruaridh: midsummer roses and a ceilidh that ran past one

  • Walled Garden & Great Hall
  • 128 guests
  • Summer

Isla and Ruaridh met at a ceilidh in Pitlochry, so there was never any doubt how their wedding would end. They chose a humanist ceremony in the Walled Garden at the height of the roses, with their celebrant weaving in a handfasting using ribbons in both families' tartans.

Dinner was Tay salmon and Perthshire lamb at three long tables in the Great Hall. When the band climbed into the minstrels' gallery at eight, Ruaridh's granny led the first Gay Gordons, and the floor did not empty until Auld Lang Syne.

What they loved most: Walking back to the Stable Courtyard by lantern light with everyone still singing.

December · Civil ceremony

Morag & Elspeth: a candlelit winter elopement in the birch wood

  • The Bothy
  • 14 guests
  • Winter

Morag and Elspeth wanted the opposite of a big production. They booked the Bothy for a Thursday in December and invited twelve people: parents, siblings and two oldest friends.

The ceremony was by candlelight with the fire going, then everyone walked out onto the frosted terrace for a toast as the sun dropped behind the hills at half past three. Supper was venison stew at the long oak table, and they spent the night in the Gate Lodge.

What they loved most: Hot chocolate and whisky on the terrace under more stars than they had ever seen.

September · Humanist ceremony

Jamie & Fraser: sunset vows on the jetty as the birches turned gold

  • Loch-side Pavilion
  • 72 guests
  • Autumn

Jamie and Fraser timed everything around the light. Their humanist ceremony was on the jetty at half past five, with guests seated along the shore and the birches just beginning to turn.

Dinner was in the Pavilion with the glass doors folded back and the stoves lit. After the speeches the band played on the deck, and the night finished with sparklers along the water's edge.

What they loved most: The quiet ten minutes alone on the jetty that their coordinator built into the timeline.

May · Interfaith & civil ceremony

Priya & Callum: a three-day celebration of two families

  • Whole estate, three nights
  • 156 guests
  • Spring

Priya and Callum brought two families together over a Grand Highland Weekend. Friday was a Mehndi evening in the Victorian glasshouse, strung with marigolds and fairy lights.

On Saturday an interfaith celebrant led the ceremony in the Great Hall, followed by a civil signing with the registrar. The evening was a ceilidh with a twist: the band were joined by a dhol drummer, and both grandmothers learned the Dashing White Sergeant.

What they loved most: Seeing both families mixed up on the dance floor by the end of the first night.
